Volunteer at SCMT
As a not-for-profit organization, volunteers are the foundation that keep us going. Whether you have a passion for building things, stage lighting, digging into historical archives, or other niche projects, we can find a place for you here at The Mill! Volunteers can also gain perks like free tickets, complimentary dinners, and more.
This is a list of common volunteer positions. If you have an idea of a different way to help out at SCMT, we would love to hear about it!
Volunteers must be over the age 16, able to pass a background check, and have a passion for the arts.
One of the most common ways to volunteer at Swift Creek Mill Theatre is to become an usher! Help guide people inside and find their seats before the show and after intermission. For this position you must feel comfortable standing for periods of time, climbing stairs, and moving through dark spaces.
Does working with a light or soundboard sound like your ideal evening? Do you like sewing and stitching while making friends? Do you have workshop experience and feel like helping with woodwork or painting? Come help with one of our MainStage Productions! For this role you must have strong communication skills, be able to climb a ladder, and lift 30 lbs.
If your ideal summer day is spent in the theatre working with students on various arts, crafts, and learning activities- we have a spot for you! We also host classes for elementary and middle school students after school and on select weekends throughout the year. For this position you must be able to pass a thorough background check, enjoy teamwork, and have a love for both theatre and children.
The Mill is filled with history. We are listed on the National Register of Historic Places and local registries. We are looking for someone to dig into our past. Whether going through playbills at the Library of Virginia for our archives or going deeper into our past, we hope you find it as exciting as us! This position requires proficiency with internet research.
Is gardening your passion? Do you love learning about plants, tending to a garden, and think that helping tame our woodsy exterior is an exciting challenge? We would love for your help! This position requires standing, kneeling, and staying outside for extended periods of time in warm weather. We recommend this for groups who wish to volunteer together.
