Mill Room Gallery
As part of our commitment to supporting all varieties of art, The Mill Room functions as an art gallery. Each MainStage show features a new artist or group of artists. Work is hung through the dining room and hall. While not all pieces are for sale, any art sold benefits the Mill and supports a local artist.
The Artist & Legacy
Rev. Dr. Ivan W. Perkinson (1945–2023) and his wife Peggy (pictured above), launched the Featured Artist Program at Swift Creek Mill Theatre in 2010 with the vision of connecting the theatre’s audiences with the vibrant community of local visual artists. In 2015, Ivan and his twin brother, Dr. W. Baxter Perkinson, Jr. , shared their own artistic talents while also helping introduce improved gallery lighting in the walls of the Historic Mill Room, enhancing the experience for both artists and patrons. Since its founding, the Featured Artist Program has showcased the work of more than 80 individual artists and artist groups, enriching the theatre-going experience and celebrating the creativity found throughout our region.

Throughout his life, Ivan brought together a remarkable blend of artistry, faith, and service. A graduate of VCU with degrees in marketing, he later earned a Master’s degree and Doctorate in Bible and became an ordained minister, founding a non-denominational church and serving countless families through weddings, funerals, and baptisms. As a professional speaker, marketing consultant, and strategic planner, he traveled widely sharing his insight and encouragement. Ivan was also a dedicated watercolor artist for more than 30 years, creating hundreds of original works that continue to bring joy to collectors and admirers. His commitment to helping others was perhaps most evident in his 18 years as Aftercare Director with J.T. Morriss & Son Funeral Home, where he provided comfort and guidance to families during times of grief.

As Swift Creek Mill Theatre celebrates its 60th anniversary season, we remember Ivan Perkinson with deep appreciation for the creativity, generosity, and spirit he brought to our community. His vision for the Featured Artist Program continues to shine through the many artists whose work has been shared within our historic space. We are honored to celebrate Ivan’s legacy and grateful for the lasting mark he left on the Mill and on the many lives he touched.
